The formula for abs is actually quite simple and I wanted to share my tops 3 tips for achieving that sculpted waistline. It all comes down to smart exercise, good nutrition and keeping a balanced healthy lifestyle. My F.I.T. programs have all been designed using this formula.
For toned abs, you need to:
1. Incorporate smart exercise
Doing a thousand crunches is not going to give you that sculpted waistline you see in all the fitness magazines. In order to burn fat off the belly, you need to have a lower body fat percentage. To get your body fat percentage down, you need to incorporate both strength training (to build lean muscle) and interval training (to melt fat off). It’s also important that when you target the abs, you do a range of different exercises that target your different abdominal muscles. You can get some of my favourite ab exercises here.
2. Fuel your body with the good stuff
There is that famous saying that "abs are made in the kitchen", and you know what it’s totally true. Whilst you need to exercise, you aren’t going to have a flat toned tummy if you aren’t matching your exercise with good healthy nutrition. My rule of thumb is to eat a clean whole foods diet, that consists of lean meats, good fat, healthy complex carbs, organic vegetables and a bit of fruit. Stay away from packaged and processed food, that contains sugar, bad fats and other additives that cause bloating and the body to store more fat. When you fuel your body with the right nutrients, it really does become a fat burning machine. 3. Have a balanced healthy lifestyle
If you are in a constant state of stress, then your body could be producing high levels of cortisol. Cortisol is your body’s stress hormone and can actually increase the amount of fat you store, particularly around your belly. These days everyone leads extremely stressful lives, so it’s important you give yourself time each day to unwind and relax. If you are already super stressed and you start an extreme exercise routine, you can actually cause damage and stress the body even more. For any fitness plan, it’s so important to have rest days which will allow your body to recover and heal, as well as reduce levels of cortisol on the body.
