Some days it’s like the world is working against you. Life isn't about having sunshine and roses all of the time. I even have off days, where my mood get’s low, I get stressed out and I just get into an outright funk. Whilst it’s totally normal to have off days, when a bad mood strikes, it’s important to not stay there. The longer you spend in a bad mood, the harder it is to get out of it. So next time you find yourself having a bad day, try out some of these mood boosters that will have you bouncing back and feeling good again in no time.
1. Be gentle on yourself
It’s totally normal to get into a slump sometimes, we are all human and it happens to the best of us. So rather than thinking negatively of yourself, accept that it’s totally okay to feel the way you are feeling. Only allow kind thoughts to come in and try to ignore any negative self-talk that might be rearing its ugly head.
2. Find something to be grateful for
No matter how bad your day is, take a moment to pause and find something to be grateful for. There are a lot of wonderful things in this life that you could be happy about. Even just being alive is a blessing - so appreciate it and make the most of it. When we learn to find gratitude in our lives, even if it’s the small things you automatically bring so much more positivity into your life. Soon you will find that even on a really bad day you can find something to be grateful for.
3. Get outdoors and in nature
Scientific studies have actually shown how getting into nature can improve your mood. If you are stuck in an office and feeling stressed, try and get yourself outdoors and near some water or trees for an instant pick me up. If you can’t escape at lunch then take yourself for a big walk in nature as soon as you can. Not only do water and nature help lift your mood but the Vitamin D from sunshine is also a serotonin booster.
4. Have a good laugh
Laughter really can be the best medicine and sometimes as adults we take ourselves far too seriously. If I’m ever having a bad or stressful day, I always feel so much better if I go and do something silly that makes me laugh. You’ll know exactly what I mean if you follow me on snap chat. Over the long term, laughter has shown to improve your immune function, relieve pain and boost your mood. So spend some time with girlfriends for a giggle, watch a comedy or do something else that will turn the corners of your mouth up into a smile. Ensure you have a good laugh and make sure you laugh often. Your body will really thank you for it.
5. Do something kind for someone else
It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you give back to others. A simple gesture of making someone else's day will quickly get you out of any bad day slump. Volunteering is a great tool for this and will also help you appreciate all the good stuff you have going on in your own life.
6. Hang out with a pet
Animals can be very therapeutic to a bad mood. So if you have pets, give them some extra love and attention and feel your mood instantly boost. If you don’t have pets, find a friend who does, they seriously do make a huge difference.
7. Get moving
Last but not least and this is my favourite, but exercise is one of the best mood boosters you can come across. That’s because it increases your feel-good endorphins, and also gives you a sense of achievement. It’s also a great way to release any strong emotions you might be feeling like anger, resentment, hurt or frustration.
