Are you drinking enough water? - Emily Skye

Are you drinking enough water?

Are you drinking enough water?

I always make sure that I drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. In the beginning, I found it hard to ensure I was drinking enough, but now it has become a habit and I always have my water bottle with me everywhere I go. One thing that often comes up in conversations with women is that they don’t drink enough water. Some of them only drink 500ml per day! This is too little and I will tell you why.

I am sure you already know that your body is mostly made up by water. And you might even have heard that you should drink more water to lose weight. There are a few reasons why water will help you get lean.

Water will help with hunger pangs
The centre in the brain that interprets thirst signals is also responsible for interpreting hunger signals. This might cause confusion, and people often grab something to eat rather than a glass of water. If you can’t distinguish between hunger signals or thirst signals you might end up eating more food than you actually need.

Water will boost your metabolism
If you drink the water cold you will boost your metabolism. This is because your body will need to heat the water up, and to do so it will need to work harder. Drinking enough water combined with an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits will help you get that lean and toned look.

Water will reduce water retention
This might sound bizarre, however, if you drink more water you can actually reduce the amount of water you retain. So, if water retention is something you suffer from, you might want to look at how much water you are drinking. If you are drinking too little, it might be a good idea to increase your water int to recommended levels.

Water will help with constipation
I bet your toilet habits are normally not something you talk about, but it is actually important for your general health and wellbeing. Constipation is quite common in people who are not drinking enough water and it is often associated with excess gas and a sense of bloating and heaviness. Increasing the amount of water you drink will reduce the risk of constipation by keeping the stool soft, but also by keeping your intestines healthy.

As you can see, ensuring that you drink enough water daily can help you get lean. If you are not drinking enough water at the moment, here are my top 6 tips to increase your water intake.

1. Start your day with a glass of water.
After a night sleep, you want to rehydrate your body. Try to add some fresh lemon juice and ginger. This will make the water taste amazing and it is good for you too.

2. Drink water in between meals.
Drinking in between meals will help keep hunger at bay and also make it easier for you to distinguish between real hunger and thirst.

3. Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before every meal.
Drinking a glass of water before every meal will help to suppress your appetite and make you eat less.

4. Drink a glass of water with every meal.
Drinking a small glass of water with every meal will help with digestion and make it easier for your body to absorb all the nutrients.

5. Buy a toxin free water bottle.
Investing in a good quality water bottle is definitely worth it. You can bring it to work, have it in your car, or place it on your desk as a reminder to drink more.

6. Add some flavour!
Another reason why many women do not drink enough water is because they simply don’t like the taste of it. By adding flavour, you might find it easier to reach your daily targets. Add berries, fruit, or even vegetables like cucumber.
