Avocado has to be one of my favourite foods. I would say I eat it nearly every day. It’s also super nutritious which is why it’s included in the meals plans on my F.I.T. programs. Avocados contain antioxidants as well as glutathione which helps flush toxins right out of the body. It also contains monounsaturated fat which actually ignites your bodies fat burning hormones and switches off your fat storage hormones. How cool is that? Especially because avocados are so delicious and there are so many different ways you can eat them. They can make anything taste good, even your sweet dishes due to their rich creamy texture. Here are 5 of my favourite ways to eat avocados.
1. Add it to a smoothie
When I first heard about putting avocado in a smoothie I thought it was bonkers. That was until I tried it. Avocado in smoothies seriously tastes so good. It gives the smoothie a rich creamy texture and taste, plus all the good fat makes the smoothie super filling. I like to add about ¼ to ½ an avocado into my morning green smoothie.
This is a classic and it’s just so good. My favourite healthy comfort food is homemade sweet potato fries (oven baked in coconut oil) and served with homemade guacamole. You can even turn into a healthy burrito bowl, by adding some salad, fresh herbs and healthy home cooked Mexican chilli.
3. A creamy salad dressing
If you like creamy salad dressings then you need to try making your own with avocado. All the store bought creamy dressings contain either cream or bad vegetable oil, making them not friendly at all on your figure. My favourite salad dressing is to blend up some avocado, with fresh lemon juice, a little bit of olive oil, fresh herbs like parsley and basil and then some salt and pepper. You won’t even miss the creamy dressings after you try this one.
4. Baked avocado egg cups
Eggs and avocado just go together so well. I like to have it sliced as a side with poached eggs, salmon and sautéed dark green vegetables. One of my recent discoveries that I absolutely love is baked avocado egg cups. You simply slice the avocado in half, take out the middle seed and crack an egg in each half. Sprinkle with some smoked paprika and bake in the oven, until the egg is cooked.
5. Avocado Chocolate Mousse
I’ve mentioned this before on the blog and it still goes down as an all-time favourite dessert of mine. Blend together ½ an avocado, ¼ to ½ cup of coconut milk, 2 tablespoons raw cacao, and a few drops of stevia to sweeten. Sprinkle with some freshly desiccated coconut and raw cacao nibs and you have yourself a seriously good dessert.
