Us woman come in all different fabulous shapes and sizes. We are all unique and beautiful and because of this, what might work well for one person doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best option for another. So getting to know your own body and what works for you is important.

When you are working hard to sculpt the best version of yourself, or training towards a specific goal, it is important to know that there are three basic body types and that you are working with one of them (or perhaps a combination of two!). This is why some women can eat mountains of food yet find it difficult to gain weight, whilst others have to work that little bit extra to convert what they eat into muscle, and other women seem to gain muscle very easily.

Getting to know your own body type will help you better understand how your body responds to exercise and diet.

Ectomorph - People with this body type tend to find it difficult to gain weight, either muscle mass or fat. They are slim in build often due to having a fast metabolism. Keeping their workouts focused more on resistance training to help build and shape muscles, without burning too many much needed calories, often works well for people with this body type.

Mesomorph - People with this body type tend to have naturally athletic builds and can gain and lose weight with relative ease. They find it easier to gain muscle definition and weight than an ectomorph. A combination of resistance and endurance training often works well for people with this body type.

Endomorph - People with this body type tend to have a slower metabolism. They gain muscle and fat relatively easily yet find it harder to shift weight. Incorporating a high level of endurance training, along with some resistance training often works well for people with this body type.

These different body types are only a basic foundation and many of us are actually a combination of two. So working to find what works best for you and your body might take a little trial and error. But remember; Life is relatively short, so spend your time appreciating your gifts and embracing your unique qualities, instead of focusing on what you perceive as your negative qualities. Work towards being the best version of yourself in a way that is not only kind and respectful but that also enables you to get the most enjoyment out of your life!
