Carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy and balanced diet. They are the preferred fuel source of the body and provide us with the energy needed to build, repair and power on. Unfortunately though, we have been very misguided in our understanding of carbohydrates and where we need to get them from.
If you have a look at the ‘Healthy Eating Pyramid’ you will notice that the main food source is listed as being from breads, cereals and grains. However this is a little dated. We now have a better understanding of the way in which our body breaks down and uses the nutrients from different food sources. We are more aware of the different types of carbohydrates (complex carbs vs. simple carbs) and how wholegrain is always a better option over processed.
Although many people will find great health benefits to be gained from eating whole grain foods such as oats, brown rice whole grain breads, this isn’t the case for everyone. Fortunately we now know that carbohydrates (and fibre) are also readily available in vegetables and fruits as well!
It is important to listen to your own body and understand your own body’s needs. As I have always said, we are all different and what works for me might not be what works best for you. Personally, I have to avoid gluten and don't eat much starchy carbs either. But that doesn't mean I neglect my body's need for carbohydrates! I work well on a higher fat than carbs diet, however I still ensure that I eat plenty of vegetables and fruits providing me with all the carbohydrates I need to keep me going strong!
