Those of you who have been following my FB page will have seen some of the videos I have posted of me using kettlebells as part of my workouts. If you haven’t tried them yourself, you should know that kettlebell workouts are one of the most powerful and effective workouts you can do, for some very interesting reasons.
Kettlebells are a cast-iron or cast-steel weight which looks like a cannonball with a handle attached. They were developed by Russian farmers in the 1700’s and these farmers got so strong and saw so many other health and fitness benefits from using them in their daily work, that kettlebells evolved into a sport and training program all of its own.
There are a few reasons why kettlebell training is so effective:
- It is one of the most efficient ways to combine resistance training with cardiovascular conditioning, giving you the best of both styles of training in one short workout.
- The cannonball shape and off center handle of the kettlebell means that every movement is more challenging and engages more of your stabilisation muscles, which means you burn more calories.
- Virtually every kettlebell exercise is a compound movement, engaging and working dozens or even hundreds of different muscles simultaneously, which again means burning more calories and building more muscle in less time.
Another great thing about kettlebell exercises is that you can do them anywhere. All you need is one or two kettlebells and you can have a killer strength and cardio conditioning workout in your apartment, at the park or even at the office!
Kettlebells are a particularly popular exercise with women because they are a great way to tone up and burn fat without bulking up on muscles. Unlike traditional weight training that focuses on specific muscle groups, kettlebell training is all about big functional, flowing movements that utilise the whole body.
So grab yourself a kettlebell or head to a kettlebell class near you and feel the awesome burn for yourself!
