Getting your ‘groove on’ is improving your health

Don’t you love it when your favourite tune starts playing and your body automatically starts to move to the beat? The kinds of music that just resonates with you and makes you feel alive. If you have ever had a night out dancing till the sweat is dripping down your body, then you probably don’t need to be told that dancing is an excellent, not to mention enjoyable, form of exercise!

Whether you are aware of it or not, dancing can be a fantastic way of toning your body and burning through calories and this is reflected in the recent dance focused fitness trends, ranging all the way from Zumba to pole dancing.

Whether you like to salsa, tango, line dance, breakdance or just freestyle, dancing has so many health benefits for both your body and mind.

Aerobic and anaerobic workout - Dancing provides your body with both aerobic and anaerobic movements, both of which are needed in the maintenance of a healthy body. Aerobic movements are achieved by jumping, spinning, swaying and twirling, whilst anaerobic movements are achieved with held positions such as a squat, or leg raise, and also with balancing and lifting your own weight.

Improves flexibility - Dancing often involves stretching your body in many different ways in which you wouldn’t normally be moving. This constant movement increases flexibility in your muscles, ligaments and joints. Improved flexibility will enhance your overall health as well as speed up your muscle’s recovery time.

Works the whole body - Unlike with other exercises, such as jogging or cycling, dancing often involves the whole body in the experience. Some dance styles may place more focus on specific body parts, however if you are just free styling at the club or venue, then there is no limitation to how you can express yourself!

Relieves stress - Dancing is a fantastic outlet for creative expression as well as a means for relieving stress from both the body and mind. The ability to listen to your favourite types of music and just let loose and dance, will help you to relax and unwind.
Plus it is just so much darn fun!

One of my favourite sayings is ‘Dance like there’s nobody watching!’, because it doesn’t matter what you look like, it is about feeling the music and expressing it through the movement of your body. I always notice and am impressed by the really energetic dancers on the dance floor. From a fitness perspective the more you move the better!

So grab your dancing shoes, chuck on some tunes and go wild!
