If you read my blog last year on the hottest trends of 2015 you will have seen my short blurb on calisthenics as being up there in trending fitness techniques. So far in 2016, it’s popularity is continuing to grow and it is no wonder, there is seriously so much that can be done with this style of exercise and all you need is… Your own body!

Calisthenics has quickly taken the fitness community by storm and encouraging many people to trade in their gym memberships for some fresh air and open space. One of the really attractive things about this style of exercising is that it is so diverse, and thrives on a little creativity.

The general idea is that by using your own bodyweight as resistance, and incorporating a variety of gross motor movements, you are able to strengthen and tone your body whilst also improving on your flexibility, agility and endurance.

It involves basic movements such as:

  • Lunges
  • Squat jumps
  • Crunches
  • Sit-upy
  • Jumping jacks
  • Burpees
  • Push-ups
  • Pull-ups
  • Dips
  • Planks
  • Hyperextensions

- As well as many variations on these exercises. Basically exercises that you can do anytime, anywhere!

Calisthenics is so effective in enhancing your physical performance that it has been associated with the increasingly popular sport ‘Street workout’. There are street workout competitions held in over 50 counties worldwide, run by organisations such as the World Street Workout & Calisthenics Federation and the World Calisthenics Organisation based in Latvia, Europe and L.A, America.

If your goals are geared towards bulking up, then perhaps calisthenics isn’t for you, or it should be practiced in conjunction with weight training. However if your goals include toning your body and increasing your strength and endurance, then calisthenics could be just what you are looking for and it doesn’t have to cost you a cent!
