When we are very young a common question we are asked by teachers, parents or friends is ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?” Our answers are often quite fanciful with responses like ‘A fairy”, or ‘A mermaid’ or one I heard recently; ‘A cat!’ Then as we grow, our understanding of our future develops and we come back with answers such as ‘An astronaut’, ‘A ballerina’, or ‘A rock star’. Then as we approach university, many of us tend to curb our dreams into what we see as being more attainable. Perhaps a ‘teacher’, ‘A doctor’ or ‘A great mum!’
One thing I have learnt is that the dreams never die, and why should they!?
We may have found a profession or hobby that makes us happy, but there are still smaller dreams that we aspire to achieve. Perhaps you dream of travelling to exotic places, or learning a new language, owning your favourite type of car or achieving your personal physical peak?
Whatever it is that you aspire to achieve for yourself, know that you are in control of shaping your own future, not anyone else.
Yes, some dreams require more planning and perseverance than others, but the time to start is NOW. Not tomorrow, not next year, not when things are less hectic. You can put the ball in motion right this second by simply changing your attitude and starting to take the steps needed to get you on the right track to achieving your goals.
Here are 6 tips to help you make your dreams come true!
Be clear about your goal, what is it you wish to achieve and why? Be specific and set yourself priorities so that you don’t find yourself bogged down with a general idea. Be realistic with yourself (flying without assistance might be one for the ‘too hard basket’), aim for what is attainable. Yet have faith in yourself, YOU are capable of amazing things!
Know that you can achieve what you have set out for yourself. Positivity plays a huge role in achieving dreams. If you constantly doubt yourself, or get disheartened by setbacks along the way then you are going to give up, and you are NOT a quitter!
Break it down into digestible steps. For example if you need money to achieve your dream, organise a means of earning and saving money. If you are working towards a body transformation, focus on the first steps that need to be attended such as a diet and exercise regime. If you want to make a career change, what studies will you need to begin with? Start with baby steps and push yourself forwards.
Expect some turbulence along the way. If it is a dream worth working towards then there are bound to be some obstacles along the way. That’s ok; in fact it will make the feeling of success even more rewarding.
Allow your dreams to evolve. Sometimes our priorities will change as our lives change. This doesn’t mean you should give up on your dreams, however allow your dreams to evolve as you grow and mature.
- Always have a dream! Achieved your last dream? Awesome! Now find another dream that you can work towards, because making your dreams come true is part of what life is all about!
