How to prep yourself for a killer workout

Being prepared for your workout can be the difference between a good and bad session. There are several ways to prepare for a workout, including mentally psyching yourself up, fuelling and hydrating yourself and of course wearing the right gear!

Dress for the occasion! Being prepared with the right clothing to suit the workout you are going to do is important so that you know you are going to be both comfortable and have room to move and breath.

  • Pick shoes that will provide you with the support and grip needed.
  • Select clothes that provide the appropriate level of warmth or ventilation depending on what you are doing and the temperature you are going to do it. For example if you are going for a run in colder temperatures, make sure you wear a jacket that you can easily remove mid run.
  • Choose clothes and shoes that you know are comfortable and won’t chafe. For example, during a yoga or Pilates class you will need comfortable stretchy clothes that allow your body a full range of movements.
  • If you are outside in the summer time, don’t forget to slip, slop, slap!

Fuel your body! Your body needs fuel to provide it with the energy needed to power through any particular workout. So depending on what you are doing and the time of day, you may wish to adjust your pre workout meal accordingly. For example if you are just doing an early morning 30 min jog, you might just need a banana and a glass of water before you leave. However if you are planning to run a marathon, you need to have been preparing your body with energy for the past 48 hours to ensure you have sufficient energy stores.

Keep hydrated! Any exercise will have you using water, as well as sweating it out, so make sure you are properly hydrated before working out and keep a bottle of water handy. If you did a particularly gruelling workout that had you sweating a lot, then it is a good idea to drink a big glass of water once you are finished.

Hype yourself up! Sometimes we all need just that little bit of motivation to get us up and going. So motivate yourself with a friendly reminder on your phone and make yourself a pumping workout playlist so you can listen to your favourite tunes as you work.
