I want to let you in on a little secret, if you want to get toned and fit you actually don’t have to go to the gym. SHOCK I know. I hear so many people say that they hate exercising or they hate going to the gym and then they use that as an excuse to not get fit and healthy. Well you don’t have to go to a gym to get fit, nor do you have to go do something you hate. Getting fit and healthy should be fun and something you want to do, especially if you want to make long lasting changes. So if you are one of those people who can’t stand the thought of stepping foot in a gym then here are some of my ideas to get in shape without a gym membership.
Exercising outdoors is so much fun and there are plenty of options to chose from. Running is great way to stay in shape, get the heart rate up and is a great stress relief. If you run then try and mix it up with interval training and hill sprints to burn more calories. If running isn’t your thing then head down to the beach and do one of my awesome body weight outdoor workouts. In fact I posted recently my favourite beach workout on the blog. Check it out here. Morning outdoor boot camps are great if you want to be given that extra push in your workouts, so see if you can find one in your area. Being outdoors when exercising really energises you for your workout, so that’s a double win in my books.
Find something fun
If you want to make getting active a long-term habit then you need to find something fun to do, otherwise you’ll get bored and give up easily. Start a new hobby that you will enjoy and get you fit as well. Surfing is a great example, all my surfer friends up here in the Gold Coast are some of the fittest people I know. It’s not just confined to surfing either, hobbies like snowboarding, rock climbing, gymnastics, yoga, bike riding are all great ways to get active, tone the body and build strength. When you find something you enjoy then getting active will be easy and something you want to do on a daily basis.
Make it social
If you find you aren't motivated exercising on your own, commit to something with a friend and if you have nobody who's keen, go and join a group sport and make new friends. You'll be surprised at how much fun it is achieving fitness goals with other people similar to you, where you can get support and motivate each other. You may end up making lifelong friends out of it. There are so many social sport teams out there you can become a part of, so get out there and make getting fit fun.
Get active daily
Being active isn’t just about going out there and exercising. Look at ways you can incorporate more activity into your daily routine. Perhaps you could start walking to work, or get off a couple of stops earlier on your bus and walk the rest. Instead of driving to the local shops walk up. Rather than taking a lift or elevator use the stairs. When you start making more activities like this a habit then you make being active part of your daily activity. This helps burn more calories during the day and keeps your fitness levels up.
Starting something new is always the scariest and hardest, but once you start feeling amazing you won't want to stop. It’s like a snowball effect, the better you feel, the more active you get and then you get fitter and healthier too. Who knows you may even find once you start feeling great you may start to enjoy the gym after all. So go out there, get out of your comfort zone, do something positive for yourself, find some fun and start getting active today.
