Have you been feeling super low on energy recently? When we feel tired and sluggish it can be hard to get ourselves off to the gym or prepare those healthy meals needed to nourish our bodies. One of the biggest roadblocks I hear from people when it comes to exercise and health living is that they struggle to stay motivated and keep their energy levels up.
I have been so incredibly busy myself recently so thought I’d share some of my top tips for how I keep going all day long when life gets a little hectic. When we have an abundance of energy not only do we feel great but we are able to keep doing the things that we love and bring health and happiness into our lives.
Add in a daily green smoothie
A big bright green smoothie has become a regular go to in my morning ritual. Not only does it taste great but it keeps me going all morning. It’s filled with lots of veges and fruit that provide antioxidants, fibre and energy to the whole body. The dark leafy greens are an excellent source of protein and then add some coconut water for natural hydration. These are all key ingredients to keep you sustained for longer and help the body in recovery, post workout.
Here’s my favourite green smoothie recipe:
Kale x 3 leaves
Baby spinach x 1 hand full
Cucumber x 1 large
Squeezed lime x 1
Fresh mint x 1 small bunch
Green apple x 1
Celery x 2 stalks
Coconut water x 1 cup
If you want an extra energy and protein kick add in some more superfoods like chia seeds or spirulina.
One thing I can’t stress enough, especially in my 28 day shred program is that to keep energy levels consistently high throughout the day, is make sure you eat on a regular basis. No skipping meals is a MUST in my books. You should be aiming to eat every 2 to 3 hours, especially if you are exercising. When you skip meals your blood sugar levels drop which gives you an energy crash, often resulting in reaching for the next sugary thing you can get your hands on.
Well we all know I love to workout, and I know it can be hard to find the motivation when you are feeling sluggish and low on fuel. However exercise is one of the best things to do for yourself to boost the energy levels. Be careful though that you aren’t over exercising. Some people when they are aiming to get results just pound themselves at the gym, putting their nervous system under stress and ultimately harming their bodies. Make sure you find a good balance between being active but also giving your body what it needs to rest and repair.
Look for coffee alternatives
Now I’m not saying you need to give up coffee all together, though I do recommend you only drink 1 to 2 cups of black coffee a day if you need to. However if you need an energy boost there are some great alternatives to add into your diet. Coffee is very acidic on the body and you generally suffer a crash a few hours after consumption.
Try adding raw cacao into your diet. This is different to the processed cocoa added to chocolate and is filled with pure vitamins and minerals making it super powerful on the body. Not only does it increase energy by stimulating an endorphin release but is also a great source of magnesium and theobromine aiding in muscle recovery and stimulating fat burning in the body. Blend it with some frozen banana and coconut water and you have the most amazing tasting healthy choco banana smoothie. It tastes so good you’ll find it hard to believe it’s good for you. Some other great energy boosting coffee alternatives are Maca powder, apples and cinnamon, or a nice organic green tea.
I absolutely love to exercise outside as natural daylight and fresh air is one of nature's best energy and mood boosters. Sunshine boosts your serotonin, which is the body's happy hormone, making you feel naturally high and energised. If you work in an office and aren’t exposed to natural daylight then make sure you get up out of your chair and take a walk outside when the afternoon slump hits. When you wake up first thing, it’s best to get yourself into natural light as soon as possible. Not only does it wake you up but it also helps regulate your sleeping patterns too.
Remember keeping your energy levels high is a key to happiness and success in all areas of your life. Whether it be your exercise regimen, your relationships or your work life, when you feel amazing everything else in your life feels amazing too. I’ll be sharing more of these healthy living tips on my blog so make sure you stay tuned.
