Have you ever been tempted to try boxercise, but were a little intimidated that it might just be a bunch of big guys punching on each other? Well fear not, boxercise classes are great fun, an awesome way to burn some serious calories and you don’t have to punch anyone (or get punched)!
First we should make a little distinction on the difference between a boxing class and a boxercise class. Definitions will vary from gym to gym, but in most cases a boxing class is for people who actually want to learn how to fight, and a boxercise, or box fit class simply adapts some of the main elements from boxing training, such as shadow boxing, bag work, skipping, situps, pushups etc. into a non-contact fitness class.
Boxercise classes are a great workout because they combine cardio with endurance and resistance exercises, giving you the best of both worlds. You will burn a lot of calories during the actual class and will also continue to burn more for hours afterwards thanks to the afterburn effect from the resistance exercises.
Boxercise is also a great way to relieve stress and tension. If you have some built up anger or frustration that you need to let go of, punching and kicking a heavy bag could be just what you need! Never done it before? Don’t worry, you don’t need to have any previous experience to attend a boxercise class, they are almost all very beginner friendly and you can progress at your own pace.
It is advisable that you use wrist wraps when you are punching heavy bags, especially if you are new, as it is quite easy to strain your wrist otherwise. Most boxercise classes will have wrists wraps and gloves that you can use, but a lot of people get pretty sweaty during these workouts…. So you might want to consider making the investment to buy your own.
Boxing is great for arm and shoulder toning and definition. So if you are looking for a way to tone up your arms then you should definitely consider giving boxing a go!
