Cutting down on cellulite

For many women, cellulite is just a fact of life. It isn’t necessarily a reflection of your weight because it can appear on woman of all body types and sizes. It is often hereditary and is much more common in women than men. The good news? There are several ways in which you can help reduce cellulite and keep your skin looking as healthy and smooth as possible.

Before I start to talk about ways in which you can help reduce or prevent cellulite on your body, I first want to look at some of the ‘medical’ options.

First of all many companies advertise (often expensive) creams to help ‘dissolve’ cellulite away from the body, however the truth is there is no actual evidence that these work, or for those that show slight results, how long they last for. In fact many women have had negative reactions from using them. So if you are planning on using one of these creams, it is a good idea to thoroughly research the product before you purchase and use it!

Secondly some people opt for liposuction as a means of getting rid of unwanted cellulite; however this procedure only works to remove deep fat and doesn’t actually touch the surface layer, which is what causes those cellulite dimples.

Ways in which you CAN help reduce and prevent cellulite are as follows:

  • Stay hydrated! This sounds simple enough, but dehydration will actually make cellulite more prominent and visible. So remember to drink plenty of fresh water throughout your day, and even more when it is hot, or you are participating in strenuous exercise.

  • Massage and dry brush! Stimulating the circulation of lymph drainage, by both massaging and dry brushing the problem areas, will help reduce the appearance of cellulite and prevent it from occurring.

  • Exercise regularly! Even though you don’t have to be overweight in order to have cellulite, carrying extra weight will increase its appearance. Also by exercising regularly you can keep your circulatory system working at its optimal level.

  • Eat clean! Opting for healthy, clean foods as opposed to processed unhealthy choices, will help keep you skin looking as healthy and smooth as possible. Keep alcohol and salt intake to a minimum as this will also reduce water retention and dehydration.

But at the end of the day, most women have a little cellulite, so we should learn to love ourselves as we are. If you are eating healthy, exercising regularly and taking care of your body, than you are supporting the healthiest version of yourself, and that is something to be proud of!
