Cellulite is a fact of life, especially for us females! It doesn’t matter what body type you have, or whether or not you are carrying a little extra weight, cellulite can happen to us all. Unfortunately you have to be incredibly genetically blessed to avoid it altogether. But that doesn’t mean there are not ways in which we can help reduce the appearance, or even prevent further cellulite from forming!
Diet - Even though skinny people can have cellulite too, being overweight will definitely increase it. So enjoying a healthy well balanced diet that reflects your activity levels is important. Another important factor is avoiding foods high in sodium (salt) as this will cause water retention and dehydration, both of which will enhance the appearance of cellulite.
Exercise - Regular exercise, both endurance and resistance training, will not only help keep your circulatory system functioning well, it will also help you stay toned and keep off extra weight. However targeting those ‘trouble’ areas will help keep your muscles nice and defined, your skin taught and reduce excess weight in those areas. Problem areas often include the thighs and buttocks, so exercises that target these areas will help keep the cellulite at bay. Some examples include:
- Plie squats
- Curtsy lunge
- Squats with calf raise
- Dead lifts
- Weighted hip bridge
Regular cardio/endurance based exercises are also very beneficial for helping you burn fat and keep you looking and feeling fantastic!
Hydrate - Hydration is important for many different reasons and you may have noticed that when you are dehydrated it enhances the appearance of fine lines on your face, and leaves your skin looking dry. Dehydration also emphasises the appearance of cellulite, so drink plenty of water! (8 cups a day should do it, more if you are sweating a lot)
Sleep - Lack of sleep, as well as stress can also impact upon the appearance of cellulite, so make sure you get your 8 hours and find a little time each day to participate in a relaxing activity that you enjoy!
Lifestyle choices - Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption will also enhance the formation and appearance of cellulite.
Another tip? Cellulite is more noticeable on lighter skin, so applying a tanner for when you want to look fabulous in your swimmers, will definitely help to disguise it!
