I have had so many clients come to me and say that the reason they eat unhealthily is because they just can’t afford to buy healthy foods, as they are often too expensive. Well I am here to say that you don’t have to compromise your health just to protect your pocket! There are many ways in which you can opt to eat healthy without breaking the bank!

  • Buy in bulk - Buying in bulk is a great way to save on cash. Sure, vegetables are not ideal for buying in bulk; however meats, nuts, seeds, legumes and grains are ideal. Buy your meats in bulk from a wholesaler near you, then separate them and freeze them so that they last you the distance.
  • Decide whether organic is best - Buying organic foods is great, but it isn’t always financially viable. So decide which foods you must have organic, and which ones you are not so worried about. Ideally you should be able to find organic produce that is in season, at reasonable prices.
  • Avoid pre-packaged foods - It might seem like the ‘healthy’ option buying pre-packaged so called ‘healthy’ meals, however you are much better off making up a large portion of a specific meal, then freezing individual meal sizes yourself. Then you will always have that quick meal available to you!
  • Opt for more fresh fruits and veggies - Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a big ‘yes’ on the healthy shopping list, plus they are not too expensive. As long as you are clever and opt for foods that are in season, as well as making sure you don’t buy more than you will be able to eat before it spoils!
  • Pick and choose your protein options - Meats, and non-animal protein sources, are one of those foods that you need to be a little savvy about. You want good quality, however you don’t want to be forking out half your paycheck just for a nice steak! So pick your protein sources carefully, opting for cheaper lean options, such as chicken breast, blade steak, beans and lentils.
  • Plan ahead - This is where a lot of people go wrong. Even if the kitchen isn’t your favourite room of the house, it is a good idea to plan a week in advance if you want to budget your shopping list without compromising on health. Decide in advance what meals you will be wanting and then buy accordingly. This way you are less likely to waste food as well as less likely to rush off for a mid-week shop that shouldn't be necessary.
