Getting a quick energy kick can be just what you need before a workout, or before you do anything when you are feeling a little drained! The problem is that energy drinks are usually filled with lots of sugar, or chemicals mimicking sugar, and can also be quite addictive!
So I set about trying different recipes, and mixing them up, to find the best homemade energy drink, so that I could gain the benefits of an energy boost, whist being comfortable knowing exactly what I am putting into my body (healthy and nutritious ingredients!). I wanted to find a balance between something that gave me all the energy boosting qualities, but still tasted delicious.
So I came up with the best hot and the best cold homemade energy drink that will get you pumped for whatever you have to do!
Hot Energy Drink
All you need for this drink is:
- Hot water (just boiled)
- Nub of fresh ginger, peeled
- 1 & 1/2 - 2 tsp. Honey
- 1/4 tsp. Cardamom powder
- 1/4 tsp. Cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. Turmeric
Ideally with this drink you add the ginger and spices to a saucepan of water as you boil it, to really extract the goodness from them. Then after allowing to boil for a couple of minutes, take off the heat, allow to cool for a few minutes then strain the liquid into a thermos, or your chosen container. Add honey to taste then pour and drink as needed.
Cold Energy Drink
All you need to make this drink it:
- Fresh water (filtered if possible)
- 1/2 lemon, juiced
- A pinch of cinnamon
- A pinch of cayenne pepper
Simply combine the ingredients into a jug or container of your choice and either store in your fridge till needed, or consume and reap the benefits!
* Don’t be put off by the hot energy drink, just because the weather is hot, did you know that studies have indicated that though a hot drink might initially make you feel warmer, it actually helps to lower your body temperature, by encouraging your body to sweat more!
