Detox seems to be such a popular buzzword these days and everyone seems to be doing one form or the other. I’ve seen so many different types of detoxes on the market, from the extreme lemon tea detox diet (which I do not recommend at all) to juice cleanses. Some detoxes come by the way of pills and others are just simply changing the way you eat. Detoxing can be very beneficial to the body as it removes away any unwanted toxic build up that get’s stored in your fat cells and helps restore your vital organs like the bowel, kidneys and liver. Let me just say first that there is no particular detox program I follow and endorse. I actually prefer to detox through just eating a natural healthy diet that allows my body to do the rest.
Why it’s important to detox?
We live in such a toxic world these days and we are exposed to different harmful chemicals on a daily basis. This comes from our pesticides on our food, heavy metals, pollution and even our skin care contains hidden nasties. When we get a buildup of toxins in the body this can affect our overall health in many different ways. When we detox we give our bodies a chance to eliminate unwanted toxins from our vital organs so we can experience better health.
Benefits of detoxing
There are so many health benefits to detoxing, our brain get’s clearer, we have more energy, your skin and hair will glow, plus you become a lot better at burning fat. Detoxing can help with so many different health issues too, including skin problems, digestive problems, immune support, inflammation in the body, fatigue and preventing chronic disease. However rather then going on some pill popping extreme detox you can do simple things like incorporate some of these awesome natural healthy foods into your daily diet. Eating these foods, coupled with a whole food organic diet will help eliminate waste and detoxify the body.
Beets have to be one of the best foods you can have that will help with overall detoxification on the body. They boost your immune system to fight infection, purify the blood and cleanse the liver. They are so easy to add into your diet too. You can have them in salads, juice them for a cleansing liver drink or even add them into your smoothies.
Avocado is one of my favourite foods so when I found out they also help the body detox I was pretty happy. It’s now just another reason to add them into my daily diet. Avocados contain antioxidants as well as glutathione which helps flush toxins right out. The best thing about avocados is they can make anything taste good, even your sweet dishes too due to their rich creamy texture. If you haven’t tried a raw cacao avocado chocolate mousse yet, then now is about time you did.
Now where do I even start with the health benefits of lemons? Lemons help balance the PH levels in the body, improve digestion, strengthen your immune system, detoxify the liver and improve the skin. That’s to just name a few. I try and add lemon into my diet as much as I can on a daily basis. It’s always good to start the day with a glass of water at room temperature with a squeeze of fresh lemon. I also like to add lemon into my smoothies, juices and salads. The vitamin C in lemon also helps the body absorb iron from your dark leafy greens, so it’s the perfect addition to your salad dressings.
Dark green foods
Try and get as much dark green foods into your diet as your can. Fill your fridge with kale, spinach, spirulina, chard or any other dark organic leafy greens you can. These foods help detox the body as they contain chlorophyll, which helps cleanse the body from harmful chemicals, heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides and much more. You can also buy chlorophyll tablets or powders that you can take on a daily basis.
Ever wondered why Japanese women just don’t seem to age. Well there is a lot to be said for how much green tea they drink. Green tea is super powerful and packed with antioxidants that help flush the system out. It’s also a great natural caffeine booster so is a good replacement for your morning coffee.
Omega 3 oils
These oils help lubricate your intestinal wall which will help flush toxins out. If you get a build up in your digestive track then toxins just get released into the bloodstream, so it’s important to eat foods that will help keep you regular. There are a few different plant based foods you can consume to get your Omega 3 oils like chia seeds, walnuts, flaxseed and avocado.
There is a reason why when you get sick your grandmother would always make you eat garlic. It’s because this little bulb of goodness provides so much nutrients to the body. Garlic is also loaded with sulfur, which is a mineral that helps to eliminate toxins in the body. It’s best to have the garlic raw to get these benefits. You can add raw garlic into your dips, salad dressing or if you are brave enough just swallow a whole clove. Just don’t go kissing anyone soon after.
As you can see there are so many good foods out there that can help nourish the body and get rid of waste. So where you can try and start incorporating as much of these foods into your daily diet and you will feel so much better for it.
