The sad truth behind body image

I read an article the other day that left me feeling a little disturbed. It was about a report that was commissioned in Australia, this year, by Dove, a leading beauty product brand. This report, found that as many as 89% of Australian woman had cancelled plans, dates, job interviews and other social or personal engagements simply because of how they looked. That’s right, 89%! This report showed that almost all Australian women have looked into the mirror and been so unhappy or ashamed of what they saw, they cancelled plans they had made because of it.

Have you ever done this?

There is so much pressure placed upon woman to look or dress a certain way, that it is not surprising that we feel so self-conscious at times. We feel so pressured to look a certain way that many of us have opted out of certain social situations just because we felt we didn’t fit the required appearance. Many of these women were healthy, vibrant woman, they just felt that they needed to be more than they were in order to please others. This is what makes me sad.

I personally do not advocate that women need to lose weight to be beautiful, or that changing their appearance in anyway outside of what they want for themselves is important. What I do promote and encourage is all of us working towards living healthy and fulfilling lives! I know through my qualifications and personal experience, just how incredibly important the role a healthy lifestyles plays on our emotional wellbeing.

Because exercising regularly and eating healthily is not just about weight, or strength, or what you look like in that dress… It’s about keeping all the internal systems of your body working at their optimal level. It’s about stimulating your endocrine system into producing happy hormones, and creating the energy you need to tackle each day.

I know that when I have been eating healthy, fresh foods and exercising regularly, I become the best version of myself. - And I don’t mean what I look like (though of course living healthy helps me look healthy!), I mean that I am filled with more endorphins, my brain is stimulated and alert, I feel more energised and most importantly it is at these times I feel the most confident in my own skin!

Ladies, as I am sure you have all noticed, we all come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and this is a great thing! It gives us individuality and unique beauty. Don’t let the media tell you how you should look, go by how you feel! I encourage you to feel the best you can, by looking after your body, because it is the only one you get!

Let yourself reach your potential by not holding back. Love yourself and push yourself forward. This is your life, so live it to the fullest!
