You don’t have to be leading psychologist to know that lack of sleep will make your head do funny things over time. Sleep deprivation reduces our alertness, our reaction times and our cognitive abilities. So basically lack of sleep makes us drowsy, confused and often a little irritated.
But did you know that regular sleep is essential to the physical body in more ways that just making us feel alert?
When you’re asleep your entire body enters a higher anabolic state. Your energy consumption lowers, which means that the energy you gained from all the healthy foods you ate during the day can be focused on building and repairing those muscles cells. It is also during these sleeping hours that growth hormones are naturally released which helps stimulate this muscular recovery and regeneration.
Whilst you were slaving away on your weights, or pumping your legs on your bike, you were actually stressing and tearing the fibers that form your muscles. These then need to not only be repaired, they need to be rebuilt stronger and more resilient than before.
So it’s not just about going all out in the gym, you need your rest time too. About 7-9 hours a day should do it!
