How to combat saggy skin

Saggy skin can happen for several reasons, the two most common causes are dramatic weight loss, and the natural course of moving out of your 20’s (Sure, we are not old yet, but unfortunately our bodies just don’t stay as tight as they used to be when we were 18!). It is a topic of concern I have had many of my clients ask me about, so I thought I would share 3 tips on how to help combat saggy skin!

  1. Work on building lean muscle mass - Whether you have gained saggy skin from substantial weight loss, or because your skin is not as tight and taut as it used to be, the most effective way to help combat it is working on building lean muscle mass. This means targeting the muscles in the problem areas, such as the upper arms, abdomen and thighs. Using resistance exercises that target these areas will help not only build strength and muscle definition, it will also increase your muscle size so as to tighten the surrounding skin.
  2. Keep hydrated - Okay, I know this is a term that gets used a lot, and might not make any sense as to why this will help with loose skin, but the fact of the matter is that hydration IS important for so many reasons, loose skin being one of them! When you are dehydrated, your body pushes any excess water to the skin layer and stored it here. If you are exercising in order to lose weight, this skin layer water storage can actually prevent your skin’s ability to retract down to accommodate any weight loss, which means you end up with looser looking skin. So drink plenty of water, especially when exercising!
  3. Keep up your cardio - Sometimes your ‘extra skin’ can be in part extra fat tissue that is hanging around your problem areas, so for this reason, maintaining regular cardio exercise is a good way to keep your body as lean and healthy as possible.

At the end of the day, sagging skin is a little like cellulite and wrinkles, it happens to us all and it is important to love ourselves with all of our so-called ‘imperfections’! Just know that you can keep your body as healthy and fit as possible by living a fun filled life with regular exercise and enjoying a healthy balanced diet.
