Why (and how) you should be cooking with quinoa

Quinoa is an amazing ancient grain, that contains a wide variety of nutrients, including, iron, B vitamins, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, vitamin E, fibre, not to mention it is an excellent (vegan) source of protein, containing all 9 essential amino acids!

Though many people love to order it when they are out, with many cafes and restaurants cottoning onto this delicious and nutritious grain, many people still shy away from buying it and cooking it themselves, because they are not sure of how to use it!

Well, I am here to let you know that cooking perfect quinoa is easy and so versatile, it is a must for every pantry!

How To Cook Quinoa

Firstly, it is understandable that many people try it once and then decide to give up. Often the directions on the packet leave you with mushy and overcooked quinoa that is nothing like the light and fluffy stuff you get with your salad at your local cafe. So here is my method that should (hopefully!) create for you the perfect quinoa!

  1. Measure out the amount of quinoa you need and then measure out twice as much water.
  2. Heat the water and quinoa over a medium heat UNCOVERED.
  3. As soon as all the water has been absorbed by the grain, remove from the heat THEN cover it and let it sit, steaming for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove the cover and use a fork to fluff up your perfectly cooked quinoa!
  5. It is that easy!

Quinoa is so versatile, it can take the place of rice (try using it in sushi rolls!) as a side dish, mixed with salads, baked in bread or even used in delicious sweet desserts! So don’t shy away from quinoa just because you are uncertain of how to cook it, it really is that simple!
