All you need to know to get started at the gym

If you have never been to a gym before, then starting out can seem a little daunting. But it doesn’t need to because we all have to start somewhere!

Here are some basic tips to help ease you into your gym and have you exercising like a regular in no time!

Fuel Up - If you are planning on making the most of your gym time, you will want to avoid eating a large meal for 60 -90 minutes prior to training. Working out on a full stomach, especially rich fatty or spicy foods, is just asking for trouble. They can leave you feeling nauseous or even give you cramps.

That being said, you want to make sure you have enough fuel in your system to power you through a good workout. So enjoy some healthy carb-rich snacks an hour before your training session to make sure you have all the energy you might need to make the most of your session. Some good options include snacks such as blueberries in Greek yogurt, or banana and peanut butter.

Prep Your Visit - Make sure you are well prepared so that you can feel as comfortable as possible during your training session. Wear easy fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and won’t have you overheating, shoes that provide good support and grip, and don’t forget to pack a towel and drink bottle as you will be needing these once you get your sweat on!

Avoid Peak Hours - If you are new to the gym you might want to avoid peak hours so that you have more space to move about, and are less likely to have to wait to use the equipment. Peak hours vary depending on your gym, however the most common peak hours are usually around 4-7pm when people have finished school and work. If you are uncertain about peak times you can always ask the staff as they will be familiar with when the gym is the busiest.

Book A Personal Training Session - If you are serious about making the most out of your gym, yet you have no idea where to start, then it might be to your best advantage to book a session with a person trainer. They are there to work with you to come up with a plan/ routine that will help you achieve your specific fitness goals.

Not Sure? Just Ask! - If you are uncertain where to start, or how to use certain pieces of equipment, then just ask the staff! Most gyms will offer you a free tour of the gym with a staff member/trainer, as part of the joining fee. Remember the staff are there to help, so even if you have already done your tour, you can always go back to the staff member and ask any questions you might have. They are there to help keep you as safe as possible, whilst supporting you in getting the most out of your gym experience.
