Most gyms will spoil you for choice when it comes to the equipment they provide. There are different machines that work on different areas and offer different results, and new machines are being invented all the time! One machine that I do recommend you use though, which is an oldie but a goodie, is the rowing machine. Rowing combines strength training with cardio and it is suitable for everyone.
Here is why rowing should be part of your gym routine:
Killer Cardio - Rowing is an excellent aerobic exercise that uses your whole body in the process. It will help you enhance your fitness, endurance, strength and stamina as well as helping you burn fat fast!
Upper Body - Rowing provides an excellent upper body workout, focusing on your lats (lower back), trapezii (upper back and your rhomboids (upper back). Strengthening these areas will not only help prevent back pain, it will also improve your posture and stability!
Lower Body - You may be surprised to learn that rowing is an excellent lower body workout, in fact, many rowing enthusiasts consider rowing to be a lower-body focused workout. The movement predominantly involves your quads in your upper thighs, but your glutes and calves will also get to feel the burn. Working these large muscles is an excellent way to tone and build strength as well as enhance your calorie burning power doing everyday activities!
Low impact - Another great aspect to the rowing machine is that it is low impact on your joints, so unlike running and jogging, you can get your heart rate up and your muscles burning, without putting too much pressure on your ankles, knees and hips.
Fun - All row machines are different, some even have ‘game’ options to mix up your workout and keep it entertaining. Or, you can always go hire a kayak and try some outdoor rowing too!
I like to use the rower as my warm up before I hit the weights because it is a cardio exercise that works my whole body. Try doing 5-10 minutes on the rower to start off your next gym sesh!
