I love love love green smoothies. Why? Because it such a great way of giving your body a good dose of nutrients and that extra boost to your health. They are particularly good if you drink them first thing in the morning when the digestive system is clear and can absorb all the nutrients you feed it. Also when you blend your greens and fruit you rupture the cells making all their valuable nutrients better available to the body. So this is particularly good for anyone who suffers from digestion issues like me. I always notice a huge difference to my energy levels when I include a green smoothie in my morning routine. When you start your day with a good health kick; you feel amazing and will more likely make healthier decisions as the day goes on. So why not try adding a green smoothie into your diet and see how you feel the difference. Here’s a recipe for one my favourite green smoothie recipe.
2 to 3 Kale leaves (lightly steam if kale makes you bloated)
1/3 bunch Spinach or 2 cups baby spinach leaves
3 Celery stalks
1 Green Apple (cored)
1cm piece of Ginger grated (or to your liking)
1/2 Lemon squeezed
1.5 cups water or coconut water
Pro Tip: Blend your liquid and leafy greens first for a smoother texture.
For some people this one may take a little getting used to, particularly if you normally drink super sweet fruit based smoothies in the morning. Personally I love the ginger citrus kick you get from this one.
But don’t just stop there when experimenting with ingredients for your green smoothies. There are so many different fruits and vegetables that you can add to make one tasty delicious and nutritious green drink. I also like to add in other greens like avocado, bok choy, broccoli and even cucumber. Just be careful though as sometimes the combination of some fruits and vegetables can upset people's gut. So if you experience gas or bloating after consuming veggies, fruits or green smoothies, you might need to work out what is upsetting your tummy. I suggest sticking to eating only a couple of different veggies or fruit in one go and see how you feel after.
I've created a table below which is a good recipe rule to follow in order create the perfect green smoothie. If you want to give it an extra health kick, then you can add in a protein supplement or powder. Or I also like to add in super foods like chia seeds, hemp seeds, spirulina or chlorella. You can read more about my favourite super foods here.
The perfect green smoothie formula:
2 cups of greens
1 to 2 cups liquid base
1 to 2 servings of fruit
Anyway that’s enough from me. You can enjoy more recipes and posts like this one if you sign up to my newsletter or follow the blog.
