I love to mix up my workouts to keep them fresh and, and this includes the locations in which I train. Exercising at the gym is convenient and has the added advantage of having all the equipment I like to use, however, I just love taking my training outdoors!
A study conducted at the Centre for Environment and Human Health, done in 2011, has indicated that not only is exercising outside good for your mental health and wellbeing, it could actually help improve your physical results as well!
Here are 5 reasons you should take your training outside:
Vitamin D - This essential nutrient, which plays a key role in maintaining healthy bones as well as enabling muscle contractions, is absorbed naturally from being out in the sun. In fact, even though you can take supplements, sunshine is the only way in which you can get enough vitamin D naturally. Vitamin D has numerous roles in maintaining a healthy and strong body and it also essential for the absorption of calcium which is needed to keep your bones strong and prevent osteoporosis.
Save Cash - One of the more compelling aspects of training outdoors is that there is no membership fee and you can switch locations whenever needed! If equipment is important to you, you can always research where your nearest park is that provides exercise equipment, as these are becoming increasingly popular and common.
Keep It Fresh - I love the fact that I can mix up my outdoor training to suit my mood, needs or location. I am not stuck with one place, I can move from the beach to the park, or even jog around and explore whatever location I am in. The added bonus is that the fresh air of the outdoors always makes a refreshing change from the smell of other people sweating it out in the gym.
Stimulate Your Brain - Being active outdoors is a great way to get those happy hormones pumping through your body and actually works to stimulate the production and release of endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. This means that not only will exercising outdoors make you feel good, it will also help clear your mind and refresh your brain!
- Boost Your Results - As convenient as gym equipment is, the simple fact is you are likely to burn more calories jogging out in the open, or kayaking, or going for a bike ride than you are on a treadmill, rower or exercise bike. This is because outdoors your body has real and varied resistance. That and the fact that you are more likely to want to keep on going because it is much more enjoyable to workout in nature rather than in a busy gym.
